Roy Halladay must have been awful last night

As Steve Simmons is undoubtedly whinnying to himself this morning, this is what is frustrating about Roy Halladay. He's cruising through the game, and then he gives up a home run to a fat former Rookie of the Year, and the Jays lose.

Because he totally lost last night's game. Look it up in the boxscore! Halladay (L, 12-8). The Jays should really be concerned about his performance, since he slid back closer to being a .500 pitcher. Maybe they should trade him for Jeff Francis.

Zaun would like to scope out other cities' breakfast joints
Hearing that Gregg Zaun wants out of Toronto to find a place where he can get more playing time is both sad and a little bit funny. We love Zaunie, but he's at the end of his road now and is not likely to find a spot around the Majors where he would slide in to be the number one catcher. It's just that he's the last to know it.

The most devastating quote of the day goes to J.P., who might have been better served to not comment as opposed to dropping this wicked Heathers/Mean Girls slam on Zaun's head:

"Part of making a trade is someone has to want you. Right now, there's no one that has expressed an interest in him. That's where we're at."

That's cold.

That comment is undoubtedly cold and most likely untrue. I can't believe there is no interest for a veteran switch hitting catcher like Zaun.

I can believe, however, that there is little to no interest from contending teams in making the 37-year old Zaun their #1 catcher, which is what he wants to be

cold as fuck, man.

JP's track record of honesty notwithstanding, why would he NOT deal Zaun if anyone was interested? They aren't bringing him back next year, and there's a backload of catchers in AAA/AA the team would love to break in (Diaz, Jeroloman, Arencibia (maybe not this year)....even Thigpen could be used as a once-a-week guy for the rest of the season). So I have to believe him on this one.

And good call, ToS. Come on Zaunie.....talk about biting the hand that feeds you. He might have been out of baseball 5 years ago if not for the Jays giving him a shot....and now he's pissing and moaning about playing time? What is he - 36, 37? You're not going to find a job starting on a contender, Gregggggg.

if the yankees are offering us some douchebag prospect who has zero chance of making the bigs, why should we make the deal? why should we help out those fucks? if the proper deal isn't there, you don't make it. you don't make a trade just for the sake of making a trade.

zaunie's still got an OBP of .349, which is good for third on the team. he's right in that he should be playing more. but by going public, he fucked JP, and JP fucked him right back.

Nice post, Tao.
Maybe Zauny can shack up at a Denny's and mentor some kids in Arizona or Milwaukee. He could also show them the ways of growing a "homeless-man" beard.

Zaunie shouldn't be playing more. His defense has fallen off a cliff in the last two years, and he's a marginal offensive player at this point.

We can't think of a single contender who doesn't have a better option behind the plate right now. (Including the Yankees).

I don't think nobody wants him...but nobody wants to pay him $3.75 MM. Or so said one of the announcers last night.

Wins for a pitcher are funny...they are quoted as a reason Burnett needs 15 or more next year and then poo-poo'd when Halladay is given exactly 0 run support.

Maybe we should trade Halladay and make AJ our number 1.

"Won't you be my number two? Me and number one are through..."

You're joking, right? Jose Molina and his .229/.279/.307???

"Given his current situation, Zaun said he would relish the chance to be a backup for a contender, or to provide a veteran presence as a starter for a team like the Marlins."

This was from the very article that was referenced. Why do people think Zaun thinks he can be a number 1 catcher for a contender?

Tao of Stieb said...

Point taken on both counts, Stoeten and erickus. We might have been egging the pudding a bit too much here.

A point in our defense here though: the reason why Zaun is unhappy is because of the backup role...so isn't it a bit douchey for Zaun to say "I can deal with less playing time, I just want to do it with a better team than this one."

Navin Vaswani (@eyebleaf) said...

that is a bit douchey, yes. but it's gotta be tough for him to watch barajas struggle so mightily and not get a sniff

Joanna said...

Maybe there are still left over hard feelings about the whole "we wanted Rod as number one until he backed out last season, so we'll just go to Zaun." So backing out, and then coming back and still winning the starting role is kind of a bitch slap to the ego.

Everyone is so sensitive.

It might be a bit douchey. But I don't know if it's as much "I can deal with less playing time on a better team" so much as it is "If I have to be a backup, I'd rather do it for a contending team."

I know that might sound like saying the same thing in different ways, but there's a subtle difference.

And JP's response might have been cold, but it might be the best ever bitchslap to a player requesting a trade. If only it could have been said to someone a lot more douchey than Zaun.

Hey, if Zaun doesn't find a place next year, does anyone think he'd take a permanent job on Sportsnet? You gotta admit, he's better than 95% of the people they give that job too.

Darren Priest said...

A lot of "ink" spilt for the back-up catcher. He'll make 3.75 MM for doing nothing next year. Excuse me while I find a more worthy cause, such as what to do about these stubborn stains!

No feedback on my Burnett for Manny and Wakefield? I take it the notion is just completely preposterous then? My xbox thought so, too.

Torgen said...

How will Zaun make a cent for doing nothing next year? His vesting option became impossible once he missed time last year with a broken hand.

Tao of Stieb said...

Darren,

Admit it: when you say "XBox", you really mean "Radio Shack TRS-80".

Tao of Stieb said...

And the Yankees get Ivan Rodriguez.

It had to happen eventually.

Navin Vaswani (@eyebleaf) said...

it's just yankees being yankees

Darren Priest said...

Torgen: I guess I didn't read the fine print. Then again, neither did the Sportsnet announcers who broadcast the game on the 30th. (I think it was Campbell and Tabler, but if it isn't Morgan and Jon Miller, I guess I'm never sure.) They brought up the contract.

As for all anything else I might want to say about the Jays, it all seems pointless in light of today's loss. No Manny, no meaningful September, no nothing. Off I go into the darkness...

Tao,

based on the fact that Rolen is injured...i think it's fair to say we got roasted on that trade, no?...while glaus hits homeruns for the cards...MOTHER FUCK.

would you agree?

i'm going to go cry my motherfucking self to sleep. fucking blue jays.

We have Rolen for two more years after this one. Maybe he'll turn it around. On the other hand........fuck.
