Cito Gaston, the manager who completely lost the clubhouse at the end of last season, will be returning to fulfill the final lame duck year of his contract.
Brad Arnsberg, in the biggest non-coincidence in the history of baseball, will not be.
And to think....I was set to post about "turning the page" this weekend and embracing the new Blue Jays front office regime.
Instead - unless I can bottle my rage - I think I'm taking the rest of the weekend off. It's better for all of us this way.
Fuck this.

It's hard to be enthusiastic about this team after they made that announcement - so much for progress!
Look, guys, you're mad and I get it, but you have to remember that the plan to phone in 2009 and compete in 2010 was JP's idea. He gone.
If I were lucky enough to be handed the reins to this team, my plan was to compete in 2012. By compete I mean finish third or better. You'll just have to be patient.
The best thing you can do right now is push that anger down -- push it down deep into your chest and ball it up. Are you pushing?

I seriously can't fucking understand this "move" in any capacity whatsofuckingever.
How can the guy who hit Millar clean-up be the right guy going forward? How is "the makeup of the roster" the rationale behind Cito's logic?
I don't care how goddamn thin the bench is/was - there was absolutely no justification to let Ruiz languish while Millar et al collected meaningless AB's. Just as an example - I'm under no illusion that RR was a reincarnation of McGwire at the hight of his roid cycling - but he sure as fuck has a better chance of being part of the team going forward than Millar did.
At least, until today.
Well, as everyone in the Show knows, Millar is a charming rogue. I never let on to the press, but his wit really made it easier to manage this team from June until the bitter end.
I rewarded him with the best spot in the line-up and he rewarded me with a bang-on impersonation of Bill Shatner.
I wish I had a daughter who could marry Kevin Millar.
(Gee, I hope I don't have a daughter -- that would kill the verisimilitude of this post. Imagine, my boy Alex Ant and I are both surfing the web and responding to posts on Jays fan sites tonight.)
The sad thing is that us fans on the Internets are in the minority. The vast majority of fans love Cito as the manager and probably don't even know who Arnsberg was.
Yeah, I don't know what to say. I was hoping that Cito would have taken an early leave, but I guess not. Maybe some in the front office thought Arnsberg is somewhat to blame for the plethora of injuries that befell the young arms last season and were maybe worried that with a reliance on young arms this season they were perhaps more than concerned about losing either Romero or 'Zep or Cecil to another visit to Dr. Andrews. Hence the choice of Cito over Arnsberg, if the choice ever did boil down to an ultimatum.
The weird thing is that once Cito steps aside, the new coach will presumably want to make his own choice for pc, thereby leaving the new pitching coach in a bit of a bind as this year will really be a kind of try-out for the new boss, not the most secure of situations.
Yeah, the news is a bit glum, but as I wrote a few comments back Cito's coaching scruples may be moot if the goal is to retool for this season. I'm taking a wait and see attitude on this.
Cito's in-game non-moves aside, nobody here knows what AA learned about what was happening in the clubhouse during his phone calls a couple of weeks ago. He knows a shit tonne more about it than any one of us will ever know, so I'm willing to give him the benefit of the doubt on this one. For all we know, Cito might be on a really short leash this season and will be turfed if things don't go well. For all we know Arnsberg could have become a real dick after Gibbons was fired and needed to leave. This could be baseless speculation, but so is drawing conclusions based on little or no information from the inside.

I posted this on DJF too but it will probably get buried under the piles of anonymous garbage. Despite the fact that us hardcores hate having him here he's still a hero to the average fan. Are they morons? Of course, they're also Leaf fans, but unfortunately there are far more of them than us so despite the fact that we spend more on this team per person they overwhelm us in sheer numbers. They can't fire Cito if he doesn't want to go because if word gets out that they ran Cito Gaston out of town when the team already had a bad season they would get eaten alive.
This is a compromise. Cito gets to leave on his own terms and yet this is a wink to us as a promise that he will be gone next year (when they are probably aiming to be really competitive). It would have been nice to see him gone but that had about as much chance as a 120 million payroll. Not impossible, but also not likely.
I'm just hoping that when Cito hit Millar in the four spot he was telling management that if you give me garbage to work with, I'll play the garbage and you'll see what happens. Cito isn't that inept because anyone that understands anything knows you don't bat an offensive black hole in the clean up spot. There is just no possible way that Cito is really that bad.
I'm gonna hold my judgement until we see what happens next year. Now if I see Carlson come in to save the first game...

Gaston staying is ridiculous, but not unexpected, as I posted prior that the Jays just want to keep the same team but pay them more money. I call this the "Status Quo" option, which is the worst possible option that the Jays can take.
As for Arnsberg, he had to go, the number of pitchers that have career threatening injuries every year he's with a team (and even dating back to his days with Florida), can not be a coincidence.
