That sucks, and it is frustrating. Because you know that while you're there starving, there's all sorts of powerful, nourishing, tasty goodness in your Lunch Box, wherever you left it. But you can't enjoy all that your Lunch Box has to offer, because you're an idiot who left it on the bench...or wherever you left it.
Kinda seems like Cito might have had that sort of thing happen to him tonight.
This is a tough one for me. Would I have objected to Snider getting the call? Of course not. But am I ready to chide Cito for doing what he did? I don't think so. Cito's a player's manager. He wants all the guys to get time, and be a part of the club. And, at the end of the day, I think he's letting young Travis earn his stripes, as all players must do.
ReplyDeleteI know Snider is ready. I think Cito knows he is ready. But he's still gotta earn those stripes. And he is.
Fuck, as you can see, I'm confused.
I don't really mind Cito not starting The Franchise today, but sure would have loved to see him come on for Bautista against Crain late in the game.
ReplyDeleteDon't really see any reason to not have Snider pinch for Millar in the ninth or Bautista in the tenth.
ReplyDeleteOK, I've stopped being a bitch and come off the bench.
ReplyDeleteSnider should have pinch hit. You're absolutely right, Tao. He represented our best chance to go up 3-2. So, he should have been in the batter's box.
I'll let this one slide, Cito...
and by bench I mean fence. Fail.
ReplyDeletePat Tabler on Scott Rolen: "For a veteran player, he's smart."
ReplyDeleteSo, Pat, are you saying most veteran players are morons?
I agree with everything you said. Except with the inference that Cito is an "idiot."
ReplyDeleteLike our boy eyebleaf, I'm torn. This would be far less troubling for me if we were left with more to eat than a shit sandwich.
ReplyDeletePersonally? I would have started Snider last night and let him watch from the bench when they face Liriano on Thursday....but I'm not The Cito.
I know Cito always takes the long view, and I guess he didn't want to throw Snider into a "coming off the bench to be a hero" situation at the tender age of 21, but damn. It's hard for a fan to watch as the guy who bombed the bleachers the night before sits on the bench in the tenth. It also causes me to dislike Bautista for no rational reason.
ReplyDeleteI remember being pissed at Cito regularly in 92 and 93 for not making moves as well, and those seasons worked out ok for the Jays.
(I think I'll give up on the anonymous posting from now on.)
The frustrating thing about "bringing him on slowly" is that we don't really know if/how it's works. Theoretically you think, "OK he's a rook, that makes sense" but logically you're thinking "if he can't bat against lefties, then um, when will he?" I'll give Cito the benefit of the doubt and assume he's doing some Phil Jackson Zen shit on Snider to keep him focused.
ReplyDeleteBut yea, he should've at least pinch-hit last night.
Voodoo Matt, good point about the hero complex. Maybe Cito didn't want him in for just that reason. Like I said, it's probably some Zen thing.
ReplyDeleteIn Cito we trust.
ReplyDeleteIn Cito we may trust, but it's the VOODOO WHAMMY we all fear.
ReplyDeleteVoodoo Whammy.
ReplyDeleteIn Cito We Trust.
I Believe in Scott Rolen.
Pennant.
Fuck off Parkes.
2009 is the year of the catchphrase. I don't ever want it to end.
We're not sure that we're going to get used to Lunch Box as a nickname...
ReplyDeleteBut if hearing Snider called Lunch Box for the next decade brings many moonshots and PENNANTS(!), we'll abide.
Oh yeah, about catchphrases...don't forget that this is The Summer of the Tallet(TM)!
ReplyDeleteCito is both a blessing and a curse. He made the team hit better BUT hates pinch hitting!!!!That game could have been won BUT what does Cito care...they are not competing this year anyway...right?
ReplyDeleteBruno Von Rottweiller
Another willfully obtuse post.
ReplyDeleteShould we all start working on Tallet-staches now?
I'll take any excuse to grow a 'stache.
I like the summer of Tallet, even though it's only spring. I don't like Lunch Box, a lunch box doesn't bomb the concession stands. I can't beleive that I touched off the Voodoo Whammy thing, (did it as an anonymous) but I love it.
ReplyDeleteHmm... from my count, including the reference from The Ack above, you owe me one pony.
After thinking things over for a minute or two I’ve come to conclusion that fans may be nit-picking. I think this decision comes down to each fans personal opinion on the following matter:
ReplyDeleteA) Jays need to win as many games as possible now for a possible playoff run
B) Jays need to continue developing this club for a 2010 run
Jose Bautista is a professional. But what message would Cito be making by taking out the Vet for a young rookie with minimal experience? Developing Snider is one of my biggest "to do's" this season. But Jose is also a very important player on this club. He basically takes over Marco's 2008 role of being Mr. Defensive Flexability. A manager is obligated to use more than his current hot hand. From Cito's perspective maybe a big hit from Bautista could be the beginning of something.
Now last night was not the end of the world but we now have to ask what is the goal of this season? Has the goal changed? I’m sure everyone has their own opinion on this subject.
How about You've Been Ricky Ro'd?
ReplyDeleteNo? Too lame?
It's verging on lame, but as you know, I went there too.
ReplyDeleteWe need someone to put a youtube video together coupling the Rick Astley classic with some Romero highlights. Then we can spam opposing team message boards with the link after each and every glorious Romero victory.
Could you imagine if Snider pinch hit for Bautista, nothing happened and Barrett got hurt in the next inning. How much we would have been shitting on Cito then? Who would have went behind the plate? Our starting shortstop or starting second baseman catching in a more than likely meaningless game in April.
ReplyDeleteAck, greatest idea ever.
ReplyDeleteBwilly - I get what you're saying, but does that mean that you never leave things entirely to your backup catcher in the late innings of a game? Even if it only applies for the first month or two until you play "meaningfuI games" I just disagree.
ReplyDeleteAck, that Ricky Romero idea is fucking brilliant.
ReplyDeleteIt needs to be done.
It would be especially great to spam the SoSH forum with.
