José Bautista is the final piece of the puzzle

The Jays have acquired José Bautista and he will lead them to the promised land.

Okay, so that's a bit of an overstatement, given the fact that the perennially-dreadful Pirates couldn't even see fit to keep him on their Major League roster.

On the other hand, it is important to remember that even though Bautista's been languishing in Indianapolis since August 10, he's still hit more homers in 2008 (12) than anyone on the Jays roster.

Bautista strikes out a lot (77 whiffs in 314 ABs) and has a replacement level OPS of .729. Look across the stats, and Bautista pretty much matches whatever Matt Stairs has done this year, for better or for worse.

  1. So I guess JP found out Rolen would be spending more than 15 days on the 15 day DL? And can we assume Mench is the odd man out?

  2. Haven't seen what the corresponding 25 and 40 man roster moves are...unless the Jays are planning on moving Rolen or Hill to the 60 man DL.

Or they could send Mench packing.

Joey Bats (which, as we've just learned, the Pirates fans had taken to calling him) can play in the outfield as well as at third, so we'd guess that spells the end for one of the bench OF bats.

  3. hill is on the 60. i hope rolen is done for the year. why bring him back, get healthy for next year

  4. I agree with bs, keep Rolen on the DL unless he is 110% healthy. No point in having him come back this year and re-injure himself.

As of the time I am writing, the Jays need to leap frog over 4 teams to earn the Wild Card and it does not look like it is going to happen.

How about bringing some of the AAA prospects up to test the major leagues when the rosters expand in Sept. I wish there could be some playoff baseball at the Dome but it in my eyes it is time to close shop.

  5. Guess the Jays are getting a little angry at what I just said. The beat down they are laying on the Yanks is...ummmm...insane!

  6. As a Pirate fan, I can tell you the following things:

1.) Jose Bautista is a good utility guy that doesn't completely suck and can play several positions. And if he's starting for you, your team probably sucks.

2.) No Pirate fan worth his salt ever called Jose "Joey Bats." That was an awful nickname coined by our hack-tastic, homerific broadcast team. I'm begging you to please help kill that nickname.

  7. us jays fans wouldn't know what a hack-tastic broadcast team is like, you'd have to explain

  8. Pat, we don't really suck, we just have a hole you don't. It's like how you guys have the 2nd worst ERA in all of baseball and would take any pitcher in our system (and probably some old ones, talk to the Rockies about a kid by the name of Towers)

As for the nickname... I vote we use it, I find it amussing. Just picture JC yelling "Joey Bats!" over and over.

  9. BS-I'm assuming you're being sarcastic?
Ashby? Barfield? Howarth for so many years until recently.(at least they no longer have the Howarthism of the weak at the Star). Although, as much as Ashby and Barfield might be brutal, I can't think of either of them calling him Joey Bats.

  10. no big deal. When he slumps JP will be saying that he is scuffling . BTW JP has been scufflimg and the Yankees, too. Wow, an imapct player....not! Whatta joke, but hey you never know......

  11. Ashby is hilarious. Everytime he disagrees with Howarth(be it a rule interpretation, or a strategy thing, or whatever)...he's wrong. And he played the game! He also sounds like he's trying to imitate Howarth when he does his play-by-play. I'd never heard him before he came Toronto though, so I don't know if he's always sounded like that.

  12. funny how people are complaining about jp bringing in an infielder who leads the team in home runs.

  13. So, I do not really believe it will have effect.
