A modest proposal: Acquire Gil Meche

Okay, fine. Maybe it's a stupid idea. But just hear us out on this one.

You can never have too much pitching, or so goes the axiom. Certainly, the 2008 edition of the Jays bears that out, what with the dodgy labrums on Casey Janssen and Dustin McGowan, Shaun Marcum's slow recovery from an elbow something-or-other, A.J. Burnett's potential opt-out, and Jesse Litsch's recent crash back to reality.

Meanwhile, the Royals are apparently prepared to start their annual house-cleaning, with Meche's name being amongst those being mentioned as possible trade bait. After a rocky start to the season, Meche has been fairly effective since June 10, going 3-1 with a 3.27 ERA in 44 innings. His strikeout rate isn't great (29 Ks over that period), but he's not walking a ton of guys either (13 BBs).

Mind you, Meche might not be overly anxious to get to Toronto given that J.P. Ricciardi essentially questioned his manhood after he spurned the Jays' contract offer before the 2007 season. But give Doc Halladay an opportunity to nestle him under his wing, and we're sure Meche will come around...right?

Meche has three years left on his five-year $55 million deal, and as has been noted in the case of A.J.'s deal, that seemingly insane figure has quickly become a bargain when it comes to mid rotation starters. At that number, Meche could fit in nicely as a number three starter, and could provide some insurance should A.J. bolt in the off-season and should Casey and Dusty Peaches recover slowly from their shoulder troubles.

Hey, what can we tell ya. It's trade deadline week, and we've just decided to throw some junk against the wall. There are four more days of this nonsense, so get ready for a whole barrelload of silly speculation.

Cheers to the Weekend Editor
Our thanks to The Ack for his steady relief performance over the weekend. While we were away attempting to explain to the missus why a $50 Expos t-shirt with Al Oliver's name and number on the back was a wise investment, the Ack brought his own take on the weekend's events, replete with Meatloaf (and meatloaf) references. Well done, sir.

Now you should start praying for Aaron Rowand's demise, seeing as how you have been designated as our Raw Bacon Consumer of Choice should the Giants centrefielder hit 20 bombs in any of the next few seasons.

  1. what do you think it'll take to get meche?

  2. Hadn't really thought it out.

We'd hate to start making up trade matchups that are really stupid... like: "We'll give them Shannon Stewart and David Eckstein for David DeJesus and Meche."

We're slowly slipping into JaysTalk Caller territory here.

  3. You'll note that I am intentionally not addressing the Bacon Situation.

About Meche....I don't understand why the Royals would look to move him with years left on his contract. Why sign him to a 5 year deal in the first place? Did Dayton Moore think the Royals would be competing for a playoff spot at this point? If he did, he's a fucking moron. So then, did he sign Meche simply to be a trading chip down the road? I guess that's one strategy....

having said that, if the Jays could get him for, say, Brian Tallett and Robinzon Diaz, then sure, why not?

Thanks for taking my call Mike, I'll hang up and listen to your response.

  4. It actually doesn't make much sense at all for them to trade him...we actually doubt the veracity of the article that says he might be on the market.

    Still...

Diaz and Tallet would be a good offer, especially since the Jays seem to now have about 50 catching prospects in the minors and 150 lefties in their pen.

    Mmm. Bacon.

  5. Not to mention that John Buck isn't really scaring anyone.

  6. Interesting idea. I like it. I think Arencibia and Tallet is a more realistic trade proposal.

Btw, I would be shocked if AJ goes for JP's "top-up" offer of an extra $2M/year for the rest of his contract. Especially when he'll command something like 5 years, $80M on the open market. But I would be pretty happy with a rotation of Halladay/AJ/Marcum/Meche/Cecil.

  7. trade AJ to KC for Meche. Jays get the replacement for Burnett in the rotation (at similar cost), KC gets the draft picks when AJ opts out.

It's genius! Except, of course, KC bears the risk of injury and AJ not opting out, plus there's the matter of the partial no-trade clause.....but other than that....genius!

  8. Tao, you can't designate Ack to take the fall for you with the bacon. When Rowand goes on a hot streak and hits the last 10 or 11 he needs, you get thee to the local IGA and pick up a pound of thick cut hickory smoked and start filming. I want to see how far you get before you cry, ya big poof!

  9. Oh and as for the trade, hasn't JP basically said he is not doing anything else this year? I hope they don't renew his contract. What a disappointment.

  10. How 'bout trading for Justin Duchschurer? Obviously not at the cost of a Travis Snider, but perhaps a Brett Cecil?

  11. Brett Cecil walks on water. The Duke of Surer is just some dude.

    No way.

  12. You'd be buying Duchscherer at his highest price. He's not this good. Plus he's already 30, and Cecil could be better anyways.

  13. Looks like Tallet ain't going nowhere because of his toe.

I still don't think we're out of this. We have 18 games against the AL East through August. I think a realistic goal is to go into September 4 games out of the wild card. And I don't by any means think that's out of the realm of possibilities, not if A.J. and Doc continue to pitch the way they are, and if Marcum can get his mojo back.

We've got to keep Doc happy, and that means keeping A.J. and trying to do something here. The Mets blew a 7 game lead in September last year. The inexperienced Devil Rays have a lot to learn about qualifying for the post-season. It's time to make our move.

  14. Barry Bonds would sell a lot of extra tickets. No such thing as bad publicity, amirite?

All the trade rumours out there re: the Jays have us as sellers.

  15. bos-cin: manny for dunn
cin-tor: manny for jesse litsch, eric eiland, and a bowl of cottage cheese

    make it happen JP

  16. Yes, you can never have enough pitching but with the Jays success at the plate more time should be spent looking for some hitting.

They should really trade AJ for a bat. But grabbing Meche isn't a bad idea as long as we find some help at the plate.

PS. Bonds for the rest of the season to sell tickets is a great idea. We all know the Jays aren't playing into October.

  17. A modest proposal: buy out AJ's opt-out with a few million dollars worth of delicious children.

  18. Maybe the Red Sox will put Manny on irrevocable waivers and we can get him for nothing (well, nothing and $40 million in options).

    Can Lind play right field?

  19. ...20th comment, thus officially and irrevocably returning the Aaron Rowand Raw Bacon Extravaganza duties to the ToS.

    That's how I roll.

  20. Just wait until your first performance review, Ack.

    No raise for you.

    ReplyDelete
  21. ...besides, I'm pretty sure the Zero comments performance from Saturday's post negates the 21 from the inaugural. That one really hurt.
