PANIC! Romero on the DL!

Via the Globe's Bobby Mac, Ricky Romero is headed to the DL with an oblique strain.

(Don't panic...don't panic...don't panic...don't panic...don't panic...don't panic...)

No word yet on who will get the call to come up, but the Jays don't have an off day until May 11, so they won't have much latitude with their rotation, and will have to get a body to fill in. None of the starters at Las Vegas are setting the world ablaze at this point, though Brad Mills (4.70 ERA, 9 Ks / 8 BBs in 15.1 innings) seems like the most likely candidate.

The Jays could go a little nutty and look to Double-A prospect Reidier Gonzalez (1.37 ERA, 9 Ks / 5 BBs in 19.1 innings at New Hampshire), or Fabio Castro or Luis Perez. Of those four pitchers, Perez is the only one on the 40-man roster, which might also contribute to the decision.

UPDATE!!! MORE PANIC!!! MLBastian tweets that B.J. Ryan is headed to the 15 Day with trap tightness.

(Actually, we're kinda relieved - pardon the pun - about this news. New closer auditions!)

Castro has not allowed a run in three starts, he allowed only one hit in his last, and had 10 Ks. And he goes on Saturday, which is Romero's slot.

I also saw on MLBTR that Paul Byrd is ready to sign with a team. Should the Jays make a push for him maybe?

PEDRO

It's a little crazy to think that there is a scenario where signing Paul Byrd seems like a good thing, but...

One concern about splurging on Byrd is that we doubt he's ready to step in and start pitching tomorrow, so signing him now and having him ready for sometime after Romero is back doesn't make a ton of sense.

This is bad, very bad. Might Matt Clement consider coming out of retirement?

I'd take Clement ahead of that junkie, Byrd.

I just punched a hole in my monitor trying to hit that button.

Arnsberg destroyed yet another pitcher with Janssen, Marcum, McGowan, and Litsch. What team has this many pitchimg injuries? Arnsberg has to go, he's killing these pitchers. bring Castro or Gonzalez up and quick!

Bruno Von Rottweiler

How do you figure this is Arnsberg's fault? That is probably one of the dumbest things I've heard. Arnsberg is the reason half those guys are good pitchers. The guy is a master at his craft and he constantly produced top of the line pitchers.

So bite your tongue when you speak ill of Arnsberg.

Word on the street(well according to Wilner) is that Brett Cecil will be called up and Tallet will be bumped up a day and start tomorrow.

Does anyone else think that Tallet looks like an out of work 70's porn actor with that stache?

Next great promotion at the dome should be Brian Tallet mustache day.

Cecil has a TRA+ of 110 right now. Mills' is 81. Mills has a completely fair .346 BABIP for his LD% of 24.5. Cecil has a completely unfair BABIP of .367 for his LD% of 13.3.

Tao of Stieb said...

Yeah, what Torgen said. Exactly.

It's going to take some adjustment looking at those pitching stats from the PCL. When the 51's are in dry or high locations, they are going to get hit harder than if they were still in the damp drab air of Syracuse.

In light of this story Tao, I'm jonesing for some good news. Until then, don't you have another irreverent video that you can post? Something to help me get my mind off this calamity.

Here comes the idiot brigade, saying it's all Arnsberg's fault. Morons.

Bastian just Twittered saying it's looking like Cecil will get the call on Saturday.

I can't wait.

PLAYOFFS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!11

Mills just pitched yesterday though, so he's at least unavailable to start this weekend.

Oopsies, i misunderstood, nevermind.

Nope. No videos.

We don't even have the gag threshold to go find any.

Tao, thanks for having a comments section that's not a cluster-fuck of stupid like DJF.

For me, the question is what happens to whoever gets called up (though I guess by now it's clear that it's Cecil) when Romero comes back. Does Tallet go back to the 'pen? Does whoever is pitching the worst of Purcey, Richmond, Tallet and Cecil get the boot?

Tao of Stieb said...

Our guess is that Cecil goes down because he has options.

Purcey will be with the team, come hell or high water.

We love Tallet, but we're wondering if he'll be able to go deep into games. If not, he probably better suited to the pen.

Richmond...hmmm...We'll see.

Three pitchers to the D.L. in the first month. What is going on did someone hit this team with a ... wait for it... Voodoo Whammy?

No Pedro drama, thanks.

I'd love to see Pedro, but Dick Griffin may have explained why it wouldn't work pretty sufficiently.
