It seemed that rather than squaring up on the 2-0 or 3-1 fastball down the middle of the plate, he opted to take the pitch instead. I think that's one of the things Murphy and Gaston tried to change, but it resulted in a worse year for him.

Just my take on the OBP thing.Davenoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2484762138483195409.post-73771140585336951912010-10-27T17:56:22.910-04:002010-10-27T17:56:22.910-04:00Murphy's approach didn't stop Bautista fro...Murphy's approach didn't stop Bautista from walking 100 times last year - when he says "OBP is overrrated" I don't think he means "I'd rather guys strike out than take a walk," but rather that he doesn't want guys trying to get walked, watching good pitches go by, Denbo-style.

Whether or not that's actually the case, who knows... but I actually think Murphy's approach (wait until you get the pitch you want, and then swing at that one) should, in theory at least, improve walk rates rather than hinder them, despite what he might have said about OBP.Tyhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/11878921441543129555noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2484762138483195409.post-81779749271207357262010-10-27T16:26:19.576-04:002010-10-27T16:26:19.576-04:00Wait...are we talking about soccer baseball now?Wait...are we talking about soccer baseball now?Tao of Stiebhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/12459135109404905466noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2484762138483195409.post-7714010362187198542010-10-27T15:43:12.921-04:002010-10-27T15:43:12.921-04:00I see "clogging up the basepaths" every ...I see "clogging up the basepaths" every Wednesday night in my mixed slow-pitch league, when the women are on base.
